About
Anthony Johnson
Anthony Johnson (b. 1982, Chicago) is a painter and sculptor whose practice centers on the tension between materiality and perception. Working across oil paint, bronze, marble, and mixed media, his work interrogates how physical matter carries emotional and psychological weight.
Trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Royal College of Art, London, Johnson has developed a visual language that is simultaneously rigorous and intimate — informed by the traditions of Giacometti, Agnes Martin, and Richard Serra, yet wholly his own.
Johnson's paintings often begin as studies in observation — of light hitting a surface, of a body in stillness — before evolving into meditations on absence and presence. His sculptures, similarly, are concerned with threshold: the moment before motion, the shape of a breath held.
He lives and works in New York. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in major public and private collections.
